Canyon
Baptist Church is located in the small mountain town of Hungry Horse,
in Northwest Montana.
The town of Hungry Horse was named after two draft horses, Tex and Jerry, who were used for logging the area at the turn of the 19th century. The winter of 1900 was severe, and the two horses wandered off. When they were found a month later, they were scraggly and very hungry, but still alive. Today the town of Hungry Horse has a population of 900 and lies just 10 miles west of Glacier Park's west entrance. When visiting the area be sure to stop for a huckleberry shake or ice cream, a specialty of the area, and to visit the Hungry Horse Dam, a 564' structure on the South Fork of the Flathead River. Behind the dam lies the Hungry Horse Resevoir, created in 1953, and covering 23,813 acres. |
